Record Monthly Performance
The tax agency had set a target of Ksh 81.3 billion for the month but surpassed it by Ksh 3.8 billion, achieving a performance rate of 104.7 percent. The collection also reflected an 18.8 percent growth compared to September of the previous year.
In an official statement, KRA confirmed the landmark achievement.
“Kenya Revenue Authority has recorded another landmark achievement in customs tax collection, recording a historic monthly performance of Ksh 85.146 billion in September 2025,” the agency stated.
“This represents the highest amount ever collected in a single month in the Authority’s history.”
The bulk of September’s revenue came from two primary streams. Trade taxes generated Ksh 51.7 billion, marking a 22 percent increase from the previous year, while petroleum taxes contributed Ksh 33.4 billion, achieving 109 percent of the targeted amount.

Streamlined Port Operations
KRA attributed the exceptional performance to comprehensive reforms aimed at tightening revenue collection and sealing historical loopholes. The creation of a central release operations office has transformed goods clearance processes at Kenyan ports.
The authority highlighted the benefits of this streamlined approach.
“This process has minimised human contact, ensuring more objective cargo release decisions and closing potential revenue loopholes,” KRA explained.
“Additionally, the reform has significantly improved cargo release turnaround times.”
Traders and importers have welcomed the centralised clearance system, reporting reduced corruption, faster cargo movement, and more predictable processes.
The record collection reflects KRA’s broader transformation strategy that includes system upgrades and enhanced compliance measures.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuous improvement in tax collection systems and processes to consistently meet and exceed revenue targets, supporting national development objectives through efficient revenue mobilization.
