The innovative product aims to deepen insurance penetration and encourage consistent savings by offering online onboarding and flexible contributions for both individuals and employers. The launch comes as Kenya’s insurance sector continues to show strong growth.

Mobile-First Solution

Sanlam Life CEO Jacqueline Karasha stated that the innovation seeks to address the significant pension gap in the country by making retirement planning more accessible.

“Our goal with Akiba Plus is to help Kenyans save consistently and retire with dignity,” Karasha said.
She emphasized the company’s strategic direction, adding that the firm is “investing heavily in insurance technology and digital financial solutions.”

The platform provides users with a unified interface to manage their long-term financial goals. Sanlam Kenya Group CEO Dr. Patrick Tumbo highlighted the platform’s integrated approach.

Addressing Pension Gap

The Akiba Plus platform consolidates four distinct pension products into a single, user-friendly system. These include a Personal Pension Plan, a Post-Retirement Medical Fund, an Employer Umbrella Plan, and an NSSF Tier II-compliant plan.

All plans under the platform offer flexibility and tax efficiency, with a guaranteed minimum return of 5 percent for investors. This feature provides savers with security in an often volatile economic environment.

The launch coincides with a period of robust expansion in Kenya’s life insurance sector. Recent data from the Insurance Regulatory Authority shows life insurance premiums grew 17.7 percent in the second quarter of 2025, reaching Sh110.4 billion.

Industry analysts note that digital solutions like Akiba Plus are critical for expanding financial inclusion. By leveraging mobile technology, Sanlam aims to tap into the growing market of digitally-savvy Kenyans seeking convenient ways to secure their financial future.

The platform is now available to individual savers and corporate entities looking to streamline their employee retirement benefit schemes through a modern, efficient digital interface.
